New year fitness goals!

Cuddly Wrote:I tried to get into the whole gym-craze.. But people scared me off. There are too many people there and I just want to be left alone, to do as I please with the machines in my own time. I can't work out with people looking over my shoulder tapping their foot waiting for me to be done with the thing.

The gyms around here never seem like that unless you go during the absolute most packed time. I went to one on vacation in Florida though that was a zoo. There were people on every machine and it was exactly like you describe. Maybe you should look at other gyms if you can't go at a quieter hour.

Good idea, but how does one look at gyms? Do I throw money (expensive starterfee+firstmonthsubscription) at them to let me in or do I just look through the nonexisting windows? Sad
I would love to make the gym a part of my routine, but my routine is already shot. I should get a routine.

Going to the gym on vacation is always weird. I've been to most of the gyms at the hotels on Disney property. Those mainly seemed to be peopled by a few "gym rats" and a few folks where are in the "I probably shouldn't have had the buffet for lunch yesterday" state of mind. Smile

Any decent gym will let you do a walk-through. Just tell them you're interested in perhaps joining, and ask if you can walk through to see what's available.

Cuddly ...finding the right gym is kinda like finding the right pair of shoes and they won't all fit....

It took me quite a long time 'til I found the gym I like the best and it is nice because I can go anywhere pretty much and workout but locally I have three of them (Anytime Fitness)...

I had a trainer for over a year and it was worth it because now I have a permanent map in my brain on how to go about getting what I need from the gym. I never really used him as motivation as much as I did instructional....

I am happiest (and often sore) when I go every day but I think my goal will be either 5 or 6 days a week this year....I set goals that aren't realistic too often and then beat myself up when I don't accomplish them...nasty cycle....

Hmmm..maybe there is my answer...I will go for 5.

Oh yeah....my motivation...I had a heart attack with three stents going on five years ago now and I have a very heart healthy according to my last stress test. He was kinda surprised even how good it was when the treadmill went to the highest cycle....it was definitely the gym that gave me the healthy heart. Changing my diet helped but exercise was the key for me.

Definitely true on a cruise, especially when they put the gym right over the wheelhouse where the motion is most noticeable. Nothing like running on a treadmill and not having it in the same spot when your foot comes back down!

On the Disney Cruises, the gym is literally right above the bridge. I wonder when I'm jogging up there if they can hear me thumping against the floor down below. Smile

I can tell you from the experience of having a cabin just below the boat deck on the Black Watch that they probably can.

Consider this my public apology to the fine crew of the Disney Magic, Dream, and Fantasy.

I'm sure they're quite used to it. On newer ships maybe there is more space and steel between decks than on a ship like the Black Watch which was built in the 1970s. Of your cruises which was your favorite?

Itinerary-wise, it was the Baltic cruise. I had resigned myself to probably never leaving the US in my lifetime, and suddenly, I got to sample a bunch of countries I never thought I would. While eating in a nice restaurant in Norway, I told my partner "This is so surreal to me, my brain is trying to convince me that I'm actually eating at Epcot Center. It's the only way it makes sense for me to be eating here." Estonia and St Petersburg were especially awesome.

As far as the cruises themselves, they've all been great. We've had some very minor issues and inconveniences, but they've always been relaxing and enjoyable as a whole.
