Even though I live alone, I always put the seat and lid down. Why? Because I have animals and I don't want them to drink the toilet water as I usually put a chlorine tablet in the tank. It's an easy way to train yourself to put the seat down. If you care about your animals anyway...

Just try to train yourself to put the seat down.
I grew up with animals, so we were always putting the seat down, so they wouldn't jump into it or drink from it.

I used to leave the seat up previously until I lived with female housemates in uni. Then it got engrained into me to put the seat and lid down.
Personally I don't mind. It's how habit. But I don't see the point of putting just the seat down. It's either up or both down (seat and lid)
And as already pointed out it helps to stop things from dropping in...our bathroom shelves are just above the toilet....too dangerous.

I don't really remember it being an issue when I had female housemates. I think we just kept the whole lid closed (It has a lid too?)
Now I experience that other awkward moment... you go in to the bathroom to take a leak and the dog or the cat is drinking from the toilet. Who has priority?

Thanks for the suggestions, guys. It's interesting that you're split pretty evenly on both sides. It's not a huge deal for me (though I probably think it is for her). I'm willing to put both the seat and lid down for hygienic purposes. Still...I may end up just using the other bathroom that's farther away and share it with the other guys. She can have this bathroom to herself because honestly her hairy habits are a little annoying. And her products take up most of the space.

For those of you that like to keep the seat up, take it off, and use the toilet without, Jim

Some long-term habits are not really a courtesy issue, not at home. People take things way too personally. As a group, men seem less likely than women to pay attention to certain domestic details and preferences. Not changing that for me is not an insult or rudeness.
The only time the seat position matters to me is in the middle of the night because I don't want to turn on the light (don't make me explain). Being half-asleep and owner of a slender butt, falling in is a real risk. Rather than trying to change my partner, who has some worse habits I'd rather change first if given a chance, I got in the habit of feeling for the rim (with my hand) before sitting. I usually have a night-light on too.
