I don't think it is pandering. I think the artists are singing about things that they believe in. Like an anti-war or political song.

I don't know the songs that the OP listed. But what I've heard lately are some gay "relationship songs like "Handsome Man" by Matt Alper and some stuff by Darren Hayes. They seem more honest to me because instead of being "statement songs" they're about feelings. And they reinforce that love and attraction between 2 men is every bit as real, natural, wonderful, terrible, complex and incredible as the "norm" male-female thing.
