Thanks East. I saw recently a programme on BBC TV called "The Spitfire Women" about the female pilots whose job it was to ferry newly manufactured airplanes to the airports where the fighter pilots were based. They didn't fly just Spitfires but the heavy and cumbersome planes like the Hurricane. This in the days when planes were very basic; no radios, no navigational aids, no heating etc. In the mysoginist atmosphere of the time they were looked down on by the male pilots but they played an absolutely essential role in WWII that perhaps only now is beginning to be recognised. Oh, and I should add that there was a contingent of American women who helped out also. They too met resistance because their easygoing, informal manner didn't go down at all well with the stiff British.

WWII marked a seachange in gender roles. Many women filled roles left behind by men.
