I plan to go to see an exhibition of Dutch paintings at the Queen's gallery at Buckingham Palace.
The exhibition has had generally good reviews but one reviewer, to my mind, has gone overboard in his interpretation of a painting by Gerard Dou painting. What I read was:
"The most successful of these painters was Gerard Dou, Rembrandt's early pupil. His remarkably detailed interiors initially appear innocuous but "A Girl Chopping Onions" his apparently simple reflection on household chores symbolic of virtue, actually teems with sexual symbolism - a jug is a phallus and an allusion to a vagina, a hanging partridge is smutty Dutch wordplay."
Here's the picture in question:

What a load of utter psychobabble codswallop! How many paintings of that period features jugs and hanging game? I can't believe that all those Flemish artists were putting over disguised sexual images. I think that the reviewer has some serious sexual hangups and a vivid imagination.

Nothing wrong with that. The fellow is happily entertained and is harming no one.
As Tom Lehrer once said, "Smut, I'm glad to say, is in the mind of the beholder."

Am I the only one here that sees the symbolism of extreme profanity in this painting?
(Londoner shakes his head and thinks.. "of course YOU would" )
*There is an erect onion with a very suggestive "Stem"..
* A hung C%ck..
* That vase is just asking for it!!
*Look at the way she grips that tub?.. in a pre-historic Playboy Centerfold stance. .
Her arched spine..Her longing lips..
*Look at the gentleman's smirk..
Was it appropriate for him to be sitting and watching a servant girl ?.. In the preparation room/ kitchen?
* he's about to take her to "pound town" that is what the scene is suggesting.
*That hung C%ck next to him represents his endowment. .
Wow.. !!
Just.. wow..!!
To the untrained eye this painting seems serene, casual.. industrious..?
But look harder ..
This is perversion at its finest..!!

You guys do know that it was one required that music be written in triple meters, thus avoiding the sexual connotations of duple meter. [1 2 1 2 1 2 1 2 1 2...]

Alas, it is true!
Now, may I a a portion of the white meat chicken, no, make that dark meat? That because "breast, leg and thigh" were embarrassing to the Victorians or Edwardians. I can't remember which.
Lord only knows what they thought of cream gravy.
