I'd suggest having beer, wine, and unsweetened iced tea available. Gives him some options. I'd also have some simple syrup made to add to the tea if he likes sweet tea.
If he brings wine, open that because chances are he likes what he brought. If you're having wine at parties (even a party of 2) I much prefer to serve white because if someone spills it, it's way easier to clean up than red.
Offering wine is not sending any wrong message, it's just basic hospitality. You can even say, "I don't know anything about wine, but the guy at the wine shop recommended this."
