I think British wines aren't the joke that they used to be, thanks to climate change! Where I live in Cornwall; Camel Valley Wine has been growing in reputation!

Don't forget that English wines aren't a new thing. Wines have been produced in England since Roman times.

[SIZE="4"]And don't forget that it was an Englishman, Christopher Merret, who invented the method of producing what he referred to as "sparkling wine" in 1662, thirty years before Dom Perignon produced champagne. The French did not have the technology to produce bottles strong enough to withstand the build up of pressure and producing champagne was an occupation hazard when bottles had the unfortunate habit of blowing up.

We owe a lot to the British for their appreciation of Sherry and Madeira and port, wines which the present generation doesn't really grasp.
I bid NO Trump!

I hear that Champagne does the trick nicely, and although I think it was initially the product of a vinification mistake, it has proven to libate many an occasion and wedding.... But I don't like wine and don't like champagne, so I'll let you decide.

No, mistake no. In both the articles I quoted is makes clear that it was Merret's experimentation that produced the result.
