Yes, your "layman" explanation is a quite accurate description. CoronaVac is the Chinese one. I looked into it obviously since that was the one my parents got just yesterday actually. I would assume Americans will come nowhere near it.
I'm not sure which one is the absolute best, CoronaVac reported between 50 and 78% efficacy, which is clearly lower than 90% for Moderna and Pfizer. In a double inoculation scheme, CoronaVac should still work decently enough. So it really all comes up to supply and costs. Which ever one you get, is what your government is able to provide for you, so you take it and that's that I guess (Not to mention that when it comes to developing and poor countries, they are at the mercy of big power politics, and acquiring the vaccine in enough supply has proven no different).
Sinovac, the producer of the vaccine has provided Chile with flu shots for years and they seem to work fine, considering I had read something about 60-70% efficacy for those.
Really, just reaching 80% heard immunity so this damn virus is gone soon should be a good story. We'll see how it goes.

Yeah I sure hope a lot of people go get the vaccine, especially here in the US...where it has been crazy bad. I have been VERY lucky to not have got COVID. I have had several co-workers get it, thankfully they recovered, but one did lose both of his grandparents, so I am super excited about the vaccine and that I'm able to get it this early, because it will be a while before the masses are able to get it here it seems.

Yeah, I know.
I'm pretty sure with the change in administration you had there things will pick up now. It seems Biden is already taking the pandemic issue much more seriously.
I am more worried about anti-vaxxers and exactly how prevalent they would be. So far, I haven't heard too much noise anywhere? But the campaign is still early in its tracks, so we will have to see.
Another thing that worries me is the cases of corruption I've read about here and there in a few places. People using power and connections, as usual. Dunno if this has happened in the US, but so far, it really has stained what is otherwise a very good effort to get the most vulnerable groups inoculated.

Oh I am very worried that there are more anti-vaxxers and those who don't trust the vaccines that are out because they decided to sniff glue and fell asleep in 7th grade science and knocked up the homecoming queen... lol Jeeze I'm an asshole reading that but true. Most of the people who fall into those camps, well, need I say more? You probably have good idea where I'm headed so... I am worried that not enough people are going to get the vaccine in the US to achieve herd immunity, if not because some new strain yields the current vaccines ineffective or some other supply chain problems.
As far as pulling strings, getting favors and such, yeah Florida...it's always Florida. The Governor, Ron DeSantis is giving a bunch of GOP donors the vaccine before presumably healthcare workers and the elderly. https://www.sun-sentinel.com/news/politi...story.html
*sigh* Why do people keep re-electing these dirtbags?

I had my 2nd vaccine yesterday. Felt just as rough as with the first. But it is done now until we inevitably need another further down the line.

Just had my first vaccine at lunchtime today. I got the Pfizer one. I don't know if you get a choice of vaccines in other countries, but we don't, we just get a letter telling us where and when to attend, then they just stick you with whatever they got.

@ Bookworm , no we didn't get a choice. We showed up at the vaccination site, and they jabbed us with what they had. We had Moderna.

I got my first on Wednesday... was the AstraZeneca one! (didn't get a choice either) Didn't have any side affects or pain at first but today my arm is a little achey. Luckily I had it on the opposite side I sleep on!
