Thanks for the imput so far guys, keep them coming.
It is surprising that some new listeners to classical music do hear the piece from the movies or commercial TV adverts. Its even better if they actually listen to more of the composer's work and enjoy the music.
Another one for you is J. S. Bach - Brandenburg Conceto No 2 in f major
Nooo, it's not that which I'm objecting to, it's where people hear the one song, consider themselves classical music fans, but don't bother to try listening to any other compositions - it's not musical snobbery, can see how it looked like that, I just think it's a shame where people limit themselves to music they hear in music and don't explore even the composer further.
I know that's not always the case, but I've had a few convos where that's been the case, and I just think it's tragic - there is a world of beautiful compositions out there.
As for hearing something in a movie first, I've no problem with that, I think I first heard Holst's Jupiter from the Planets Suite in one of those endy-worldy movies.
I like far too much classical music to name, even just, my favourites. However if I had to choose a single piece right now in my current inebriated state it would be Mozart's Symphony No. 41 in C, AKA Jupiter. However if you ask me tomorrow I am sure I will have a different answer.

Life is what happens while you are busy making other plans.
I know this is one of those pieces that even cretins and philistines and other such non-musically-trained individuals love, but it's actually because it's really really good.
