Manly Men! and stereotypes
#11
I'm definitely no Don Draper. However, it is fun to walk around without a shirt sometimes *grins*. I can't do much under the hood, nor the house, or the garden willingly come to think of it. I mow lawns, I play guitar, etc. I've always considered myself masculine though mainly because I'm brave and I don't let fear control me. If it scares the #$%& out of you, you're probably doing the right thing.

and btw, almost all of my friends are straight guys, and none of them can do anything with a car, plumbing etc. My generation sucks. Smile

I wouldn't consider myself a manly man.....especially when it comes to cars and tools an such.

But i do have manly man side, I like manly sports like hockey and M.M.A, I have a manly beard and My manly fist has on occasion collide with another manly mans face.

I balance that out by listening to girlie pop rock so it all evens out.

I rebuilt the engine of our 1966 Ford Mustang. Rewired the whole car, reupholstered and repainted and finished the car, I cherried her out. Is that manly enough for you?

Before you get hot and bothered about that, I opened the hood to our 2005 Saturn and suddenly felt like a caveman. I could barely distinguish elements of the engine. Times and engines have changed. Cry

I am so out of my element with this new car I send my partner to the Lube place to get the oil changed. I'm too much of a 'man' to actually admit that I do not know how to change the oil filter on this new car that has no room to maneuver under the hood.

I am handy mending a fuse, unplugging the sink, etc. I am more of a lesbian in my choice of skills than gay man. I actually did lots of roofing as a kid, that moved to rough framing, then to finish carpentry. I have the basics of hanging Sheetrock... and more.

In 2001 I gutted our house, rebuilt the kitchen and Bathroom from the floor up, redoing all of the plumbing and electric for those two rooms, built the kitchen cabinets, retrofitted some of the remaining walls to be a bit more earthquake resistant and laid in a ton of insulation to make our tiny 500 square foot home more energy efficient.

I still potter around with wood working, I build the occasional stick of furniture.

I am not your 'typical' gay guy. I have no sense of fashion, I firmly believe that plaid is a color and I have been caught in the shower on more than one occasion using bar soap to wash my face and my hair. Granted my partner was in a state of near panic lecturing me about which products to use on the face, and pointing at the various products telling me what each does and what they are used for.

Did you know there is body shampoo and you have to use a special 'tool' to use it? I don't know what that red puff-ball thing is called. And body shampoo is not the same thing you use on your head. Sheesh.

I have to lock the door in order to shave in peace. There seems to be a direction that is acceptable to shave in - the way I do it and have done it all my adult life is, I guess, wrong..... Rolleyes

On the brighter side, when I repainted my 'Redneck truck' I didn't paint it a light shade of brown - no I was informed I painted it 'taupe'. I like the color whatever you want to call it.

I also bake and cook - if it wasn't for me we would be eating box meals. I love my partner dearly, but he doesn't seem to have any domestic life skills. But I didn't marry him for his domestic abilities nor his money.... Wink

Bowyn, modern cars are made that way just so you'd have to go to Midas... or wherever you get your car serviced... It's bad but it's engineered so that no one can do their cars themselves these days... Like products that we would have been able to mend in the olden days, they have evolved to be thrown out or given to a specialist... No more of your ordinary man tampering... It must be because of all the complex electronics that go into such machines theses days...

Lol, at the question. Sometimes not knowing how to do certain things makes people angry, but not me. I sometimes relish my stupidity, my tunnel-vision. You know how to play a guitar and bake a cake. I know how to eat a cake and stare at a guitar. Some people know ONLY their professions. But, seriously, we ALL, can't be know-it-alls... like me.

I can fix my PC, and not just twink Windows and install software, but I can deal with hardware and stuff...
I bought a new car, just to avoid messing with oil / water shortages ETC., so that makes me a girl on the macho-man scale....... on the other hand, I do like big cars that can go from 0 to 60 in less than 10 seconds...

I don't cook or bake (unfortunately), I can't do the laundry (even though I have my own washing machine hehe).......

That's about sums it up...
Oh, and I'm brand new around here (right out of the oven :-) )

I am glad I am not the only guy who resorts to similar tactics.
