Measuring homosexuality
#21
First one needs define exactly what one means by homosexuality. Is it identity, attraction, behaviour, or something else? Then one needs to ask how it could actually be measured? One can ask people about identity, but they may lie or have their own peculiar or irrational identities that do not may to one of the possibilities considered by researchers. One can physically measure attraction in men, however it is socially awkward and rather inhibitory, also some men have a very potent imagination and can over-ride what images are shown to them. Behaviour is directly observable, but trying the observe people for enough time in the real-world i.e. months and years is practically impossible and the mere knowledge that they being observed changes subjects behaviour. One can simply ask about behaviour but we know that people 'mis-recall' events with great ease.

In short I think reliable objective measurement of homosexuality is impossible.

What would be the point of measuring homosexuality? Personally I believe homo sapiens are always changing, our perceptions about life change over time and all this affects one's sexuality and what we are open to sexually, being gay or not or maybe is after all in the mind.

Perhaps in the 50's they still believed that homosexuals can be cured with the right therapy
if they institutionalized them and subjected them to Electroconvulsive therapy.
I am not sure I was not born till the mid 60's and by that time the whole sexual reveloution had taken place.
IMHO placing a measurement on Homosexuality is like saying a woman is only a little bit pregnant .Rolleyes

I need to clear something up. Basically, with this thread I was asking if it would be more or less accurate, given the scope of sexuality, for some to say something like "I'm 25% gay" or "I'm 80% gay" instead of just "I'm gay" or "I'm straight".

i would say that depends on the time al like 2200 years ago you were only homosexual if certain conditions were met like it was ok to pleasure yourself if it was only beteween the legs and wwhen they were below the age of 18 if you fell inlove and did it any longer then you were preverted (aproxamently times involved) then at a later4 date or newer to your time date if you ever got a hard on with a guy no matter what then you were homosexual
eeven later hystory it became to be that preverted was what ever the greater portion of the masses. says it is and it changed constantly thruout history. generly that is the way it works
og course it is much more complacted thru history with sexual morality.
as remember that too much sex is anyone that is getting more than me

Science relies heavily on a system of measuring the subject being researched.

No matter the subject, measuring it helps us to identify it and know more about it.

When it comes to humans, sex and sexuality we live in a world of myth and story, with few 'hard facts'. Thus such popular beliefs like 'heterosexual is natural' leads to people supporting other notions like, gay people go to hell.

On the Kinsey scale (and I can say this without shame) I am about 90% gay with 10% heterosexual tendencies. It is only a guide point, not a 'hard fact' to where out of ten partners I have to make certain one is female.

But it does explain, for me at least, why it is I found Toni (a girl I once knew) to be sexually attractive. It also explains the occasional hetero-erotic dreams I have. It also may explain why I can be 'turned on' occasionally by a set of boobies.

In reverse, If I was 90% heterosexual 10% gay and had a sexual attraction for Jim (a guy I once knew), or have the occasional homoerotic dream or even be turned on by the occasional set of pecs, it would explain a lot and most likely not lead me down to abusing myself and others over those minor 'gay tendencies'.

If society as a whole accepted that most of us are bi to one degree or another, then this opens the door for honest, truthful discussion about being 'mostly straight' and not having a fear that because I had a homoerotic dream that I am somehow sick, or going to hell.

With out a measuring scale, we could not identify where people are and gain a better understanding of the population as a whole. Science also allows us to measure time, distance, temperature, energy released during Y, and many other things.

My opinion? Almost everyone is bisexual. 100% straight and 100% gay might exist, but way less than one would expect given how absolute most people think the issue is. Society is what establishes the boundaries, not biology.

I thought this was coherent regarding sexual orientation, choice, and law:
