My husband and I had been together for over ten years when same-sex marriage became legal in New Hampshire. Thinking back I don’t recall either one of us ever proposing the other. We had discussed our desire to be married so often before it became legal that it was just a formality (Our attorney married* us with two witnesses from her staff) when the law changed in 2008.
If things were different and I met someone now that I wanted to marry I would prefer to be the one doing the asking. If the answer is ‘no’ then it would be easier for me to hear it then it would be for me to say it. But that’s just me.
*New Hampshire permitted same-sex civil union as of 01/01/08 and my husband and I had our ceremony in February of that year. In 2009 the New Hampshire legislature changed the law and every Civil Union would automatically become a Marriage on 01/01/11. However if you wished a couple could have their Civil Union to converted to Marriage as of 01/01/10. We did just that and now as the clock strikes mid-night on New Year’s Eve we also celebrate our wedding anniversary
