How are you today?
How long ago was the breakup? If the party's not for a few more weeks, that might give them a bit of distance from the event and give them some cool down time. Might depend on how long they were together. How likely would they be to cause a scene at your party if they both go?

If there's a chance that they might cause a scene then it would definitely be worth inviting them both. Just pull up a chair and grab some popcorn!

Thanks for bothering!

1. A few months ago.

2. They probably wouldn't cause a scene although my friend (the guy) has stated that he's not coming if she is.

These people are incredibly dramatic although not in a confrontational "in front of everyone" kind of way. More like emphasizing problems that aren't problems, somehow managing to include me in things that shouldn't be my business and just... never managing to get over things. I'm not sure if I should respect that that's just the way they are or oppose it. Fuck, just talking about it makes me feel all teeny and repulsive :o

Wade, have I told you lately that you're my hero?

Solemn, how about inviting neither of them? Not sure it will help your esteem with them, but it'll be a rather unexpected wildcard move. Keep 'em on their toes, y'know. Just tell each one you're inviting the other.

Or go with Wade's plan, tell each one you're NOT inviting the other - and watch the sparks fly.

Alright, here's what you do (I think I saw this on a sitcom once).

Invite them both but tell each of them that you decided not to invite the other because your friendship with... whichever, is more important to you. Then, recruit another friend to monitor one of them while you're occupying the other (radio earbuds will be necessary). Be sure to switch regularly.

Now this can go one of two ways. Either it's successful and you'll have to continue separate friendships with both while maintaining the lie that you're no longer in contact with the other for the rest of all your lives....

Or, the operation will fail, the two will meet at the party, realize what an elaborate set up you've concocted and appreciate all the work you went through to keep their friendships and you'll all have a good chuckle. Then of course, your friends will fight bitterly making everyone around them uncomfortable and everyone leaves early.

Good luck!

I like the idea in theory but I doubt I'd be all that keen on executing it. I either invite both of them and they decide whether to go or not, or I invite my closest friend only. I'm leaning towards the former option because to me it's the one that makes the most sense. I just wanted to see if people disagreed because I can sometimes have very "unusual" opinions in these kinds of dilemmas.

I think I'll just label myself Mr. dontgiveafuck, invite them both and go back to bed. It was a surprisingly easy conclusion to reach and I'm sorry for wasting the time of you eloquent chaps. Night!

Honestly, that's the best approach.

No, I actually enjoyed this little exchange. Thank your overdramatic friend for waking you up in the wee hours and prompting you to post this.
