That's a common misconception. .
If he gargled an alcohol based antiseptic. . Yes..
But if he ingested alcohol. . It will slow the production of anti- bodies needed to fight the infection. .

So in other words a see saw effect. .
Kinda like how drinking a shot of rum if you have the flu makes some people feel better.. and some worse. .

Ethanol is ethanol anywhere, beverages or antiseptics, concentration being the only difference you'd find. Antiseptics may have other things than ethanol, naturally.

Ethanol is toxic enough for you to not worry about trivial things like antibody production because entire cells are dying, yours and your uninvited infectious guest.

(antibodies do not fight the infection btw, they mark the pathogen as a target for the immune cells and molecular effectors that do)

esophagus .. this is the reason a home remedy like salt water is recommended for the throat Vs an antiseptic / anti biotic for the skin...
On the other hand salt water can help a mild epidermis abrasion but an ethanol based mouthwash will not rid the oesophagus of a serious infection. ..

Playing with membrane stability and lysing the cells are the ideas behind using salt water I reckon. Although that will also target your own epitelium and locally dehydrate that tissue, which is also not good.

Ethanol penetrates to the tissues, given its hydrophobic skeleton and small size, and kills everything its path, given there is enough of it..and mouthwashes do not have enough of it. Your choice would be higher concentrations of it, and deal with its toxicity

(although, some hypocrisy here is ocurring, cause many many people drink like there's no tomorrow, but then worry about a little ethanol for tonsils...ridiculous in my opinion)

I'm not very inclined to think either one is a particularly good idea to help with tonsillitis, because both come at the cost of some of your own tissue too.

Antibiotics are very selective, and the best alternative you'd get if this goes for long or too intense.

Ideally you'd want to have a culture done to identify the pathogen and a proper test of sensitivity to best select the antibiotic.

As for the moment, water, rest and symptom relievers are in order. Antipyretics, antiinflammatories, etc
