The explanation?

When my father was just learning to speak, he started calling his parents by their first names because that is what he heard them call one another.

So to change that...they started calling one another Mummy and Daddy....and for the next 50 years it stuck.

But in the US and even in the area I grew up in, in rural communities, it wasn't unusual to hear a couple refer to one another as Ma and Pa.
