I hear often that men are "wired" to be promiscuous because of the need to further build the species, and that monogamy is an artificial construct that arose out of the need to ascertain inheritance of land/property and now perpetuated by women. Thus the argument is made that gay men, who are for the most part are not producing offspring, have no need to be monogamous.
This may well be but it doesn't lend itself to lasting relationships unless both parties know this and are cool with it. I suspect that there is often a sense of "yes, but what ELSE could I have?" which is egged on by social media and dating apps. If you are a "6" that landed a "8" he's looking over your shoulder at the "9" and wondering if he could hit that.
