Well, of course it is not viewed as a tax, it is a "voluntary contribution", although anyone who doesn't "volunteer" is pretty much damned.
Perhaps you might spare a thought for my dad. He has just decided that he can no longer accept the teachings of the LDS church and told his bishop on Sunday that he would not be attending church any more. He's having a tough time dealing with the realisation that there aren't the safe answers that he was hoping for ... and he's been thinking about the "voluntary contributions" he has paid in good faith since 1961.
