wow, so excited to hear your news. I think just like you he is nervous and speechless. Just go straight to the matter and tell him " I saw you often at school but we have never talked. We should be friend and hang out sometimes". That way if he is not into you, he could not tell anyone that you are gay because it seems like a normal conversation.

And it 's between you and him so I don't think you have to mention anyone else as reason for conversation. It will be a safe move to mention something else before going straight to the main thing. However, your situation is different because he may already has something for you. You need to show him that you are more than just curious and that you want to be friend.
If he is not into you, it may be suspicious but he cannot do anything about that. He may not want to be friend with you because of that suspicion but you have nothing to lose. If he is not into you in the beginning, it will not likely that he will be friend with you and eventually he will fall for you. Also, I was a popular kid so I know that no popular kid would go around to brag that "that ..... kid falls for me so he sends me a message to ask to be friend with me". It will make him less cool. Your message is suspicious but it 's too normal to jump into conclusion unless he is already into you for that many years.
