Carandiru - wow, an excellent film.
Based on the true story of carandiru prison in sao paulo, Brazil, and the massacre that took place there of 111 inmates by riot police, after a prison riot on october 2nd 1992. The whole film itself is not all about the riot/massacre (thats towards the end) but prison life and events leading up to the riot, Just once again "wow" . If you liked "City of god" you will recognise the vibrancy, style, with all the off-shooting storys, you really get a sense of life in brazil. completley unrelenting, sad, funny, shocking. Its based on the book "carandiru station" by the actual prison doctor, who is sort of the central character. I dont feel ive done it justice though, it deserves to be seen

Side note - the officer in charge of the operation was initially given a 612 year prison sentence, but all charges were dropped, due to his only following orders (so who gave the orders!) He was assasinated. As was the prison warden.
One of brazils most notorious gangs is thought to have been formed in1993 in response to the massacre. 9 inmates were killed by other inmates during the riot/massacre. The prison was built as a model prison in the 1920s, its now been demolished.

I've seen a lot of movies lately!
Barry Lyndon - Stanley Kubrick. I liked it but not as much as I like most of his other films. It was really beautifully shot! Stalker - Andrei Tarkovsky. This is really a movie you have to be in the right mood to appreciate... luckily I was and I loved it! Au hasard Balthazar - Robert Bresson. An arthouse film that I thought was decent but nothing more. I don't mind artsy movies but the symbolism should at least be approachable without READING the director's intent. There's no way some of the allegorical stuff could be understood without receiving the information from another source which was offputting to me. A donkey representing the sufferings of Jesus and going through the 7 deadly sins is a little farfetched to just assume on your own.
