"Who will love me children" does it for me every time

Who Will Love My Children? (1983)

Synopsis: Lucile Fray (Ann-Margret), is the caring mother of 10 young children. She is the loving wife of Ivan (Frederic Forrest), a man almost crippled by arthritis. She is also dying. Stricken by a terminal illness, she has only a few months left to live. Her husband, tormented by the painful truth, turns to the bottle and, with a broken heart, Lucile is forced to accept that he will never be able to cope as a father alone. And so, for the sake of the children she loves so much, the young mother must make an agonising decision. Inspired by real-life events, 'Who Will Love My Children' is a tribute to one woman's courage and strength - a story of sacrifice and of a dying mother's undying love.

Supreme Court of Connecticut has overturned a ban on gay marriage

Connecticut Supreme Court overturns ban on gay marriage - from Pink News - all the latest gay news from the gay community - Pink News

The Supreme Court of Connecticut has overturned a ban on gay marriage saying that by stopping same sex partners from marrying was a violation of their constitutional rights.

The White House has condemned the court's decision and said the federal definition of a marriage as being between a man and a woman.

The state joins California and Massachusetts as the only three allowing full gay marriage.

Although it has allowed civil unions since 2005, unions do not have the full, federal legal protections of marriage.

The ruling can not be appealed and will come into effect on October 28th 2008.

The judgement follows a case that began four years ago when eight same-sex couples sued the state arguing that by not allowing them to marry, the state discriminated against them in volitional of their constitutional rights.

The majority 4-3 opinion said that the "segregation of heterosexual and homosexual couples into separate institutions constitutes a cognisable harm."

Justice Richard Palmer added: "our state scheme discriminates on the basis of sexual orientation… and the state has failed to provide sufficient justification for excluding same sex couples from the institution of marriage.

"In accordance with our conclusion that the statutory scheme impermissibly discriminates against gay persons on account of their sexual orientation, we reverse the trial court’s judgement and remand the case with direction to grant the plaintiffs’ motion for summary judgement.

"Interpreting our state constitutional provisions in accordance with firmly established equal protection principles leads inevitably to the conclusion that gay persons are entitled to marry the otherwise qualified same-sex partner of their choice,” Justice Palmer declared.

"To decide otherwise would require us to apply one set of constitutional principles to gay persons and another to all others."

Republican state Governor Jodi Rell said that although she disagreed with the judgement, she would uphold it.

"I do not believe their voice reflects the majority of the people of Connecticut," the Governor said.

"However, I am also firmly convinced that attempts to reverse this decision, either legislatively or by amending the state Constitution, will not meet with success."

Karl Zinsmeister, President George W Bush's Director of Domestic Policy said: "President Bush has always believed that marriage is a sacred institution between a man and a woman.

"It's unfortunate that activist judges continue to seek to redefine marriage by court order without regard for the will of the people.

"Today's decision by the Connecticut Supreme Court illustrates that a federal constitutional amendment may be needed if the people are to decide what marriage means."

In November, Proposition 8 – calling for a ban on gay marriage goes before voters in California.

Whilst my last post is being moderated, I just thought I would let you know I have re-added it anyway

No worries SS

I just bought the Sweeney Todd special edition DVD from HMV in their sale for £7!!!!! Xyxthumbs

Have watched it (I did see and enjoy it in the cinema) and it is fab - Johnny Depp and Helena Bohnam Carter do a fab job of both acting and singing. I was warned by the saleswoman at HMV that it was a musical!! I didnt know when going to the cinema actually, but apparently they've had a few returns from people who just wanted a gory film!!

*************WARNING MOVIE SPOILER AHEAD - DO NOT READ IF YOU WANT TO SEE THE MOVIE AND NOT KNOW WHAT HAPPENS************

I know its gory but I didn't find it terribly scary - all the gore was easy to predict - the nastiest bit IMO was at the end where he dances her into the open oven, but it was predictable from the onset of that scene.

*********************SPOILER OVER**********************

I thought Batman (dark knight) was scarier/nastier and am therefore surprised that DK was a 12a certificate and ST was an 18!!!

Anyone else seen the film and enjoyed it? Or otherwise.

Olympic Oz swimming champ Matthew Mitcham "proud" to be gay role model
Posted by: andy - 10-08-2008, 01:20 PM - Forum: Gay-News - Replies (1)

[img2=left]http://www.gayspeak.com/forum/images/news/matthewmitcham.jpg[/img2]Australian diver Matthew Mitcham has said he was "very surprised" that he was the only gay male athlete at the Beijing Olympics in August.

The 20 year old won a gold medal in the 10-metre platform event, beating the Chinese favourites.

"I was actually very surprised that I was the only 'out' male at the Olympic Games," he told The Age newspaper.

"It's a little bit sad because, statistically, there should be a lot more.

"But, you know what, it's each to one's own and I'm not going to pressure anybody to come out of the closet because it's their own choice.

"But I'm proud to be there and proud to be that one that lots of other people can look up to."

Mr Mitcham came out before the Games, but said that the subsequent publicity did not affect his performance in Beijing.

"It's always just me, I'm comfortable with myself," he said.

"At least it wasn't a surprise to everybody else.

"And I am glad that I did it before I went away, than afterwards because there have been a few coming out after the Olympic Games and I just wanted to be a bit different."

Despite intensive coverage of other gold medallist’s personal lives during the Games, US broadcaster NBC failed to mention Mitcham was gay, or show footage of the diver’s partner cheering him on and congratulating him after the win.

The network's head of Olympics later conceded that NBC had been at fault.

"We regret that we missed the opportunity to tell Matthew Mitcham's story," said Gary Zenkel.

"We apologise for this unintentional omission."

Of the 11,000 athletes from 204 nations, just 11 out LGB people, Mr Mithcam and ten lesbian or bisexual athletes, competed.

Obama's stance on gay rights gets Hollywood actress Drew Barrymore's vote
Posted by: andy - 10-08-2008, 01:19 PM - Forum: Gay-News - Replies (1)

[img2=left]http://www.gayspeak.com/forum/images/news/baracksigned.gif[/img2]A Hollywood actress has said she is backing the Democratic nominee for President of the United States after she heard him talk about equality for gay and lesbian people.

In an interview with Harper's Bazaar, Drew Barrymore said that Barack Obama's "sensitivity" on the issue had won her over.

"When I heard him speak about a gay person never having to sit outside the hospital room with their loved one sick inside, I burst into tears because so many people I care about are homosexual and it was profound to have someone be sensitive to that," she said.

"That's the kind of world I want to live in, where we're not holding our own principles in judgement above someone or against someone."

While supportive of most gay rights, Senator Obama does not support gay marriage.

"I support the notion that all people — gay or straight — deserve the same rights and responsibilities to assist their loved ones in times of emergency, deserve equal health insurance and other employment benefits currently extended to heterosexual married couples, and deserve the same property rights as anyone else," he wrote in a response to questions put to him by the gay press.

"If elected, I would call on Congress to enact legislation that would repeal DOMA and ensure that the over 1,100 federal legal rights and benefits currently provided on the basis of marital status are extended to same-sex couples in civil unions and other legally recognised unions."

The Defence of Marriage Act (DOMA) bars the federal government from recognising same-sex marriages.

The Republican nominee for President, Senator John McCain, opposes gay adoption and has said of marriage:

"Union - a union between a man and a woman, between one man and one woman. That's my definition of marriage."

He does not back a constitutional amendment on the matter.

However, during an appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show in May he told the host, who was about to marry her girlfriend Portia De Rossi:

"I think that people should be able to enter into legal arrangements.

"I think that is something we should encourage, particularly in the case of insurance and other areas, decisions that have to be made.

"I just believe in the unique status between man and woman, and I know that we have a respectful disagreement on that issue."

Americans will elected the next President of the United States on November 4th.

California sees 11,000 same-sex weddings since new legislation
Posted by: andy - 10-08-2008, 01:18 PM - Forum: Gay-News - No Replies

[img2=left]http://www.gayspeak.com/forum/images/news/gaycaliforniamarriage.jpg[/img2]New research published in Los Angeles today has revealed that estimated 11,000 same-sex couples have married in California in the first three months since gay weddings were ruled legal in the state.

The Williams Institute estimates that the number same-sex couples in the state has increased to 109,000, or 14% of the US total, and there are 861,000 lesbian, gay, and bisexual adults living in California.

Same-sex couples live in every county in California, constituting 9 of every 1,000 households.

San Francisco has the highest percentage of lesbians, gay men, and bisexuals at 14%, followed by Humbolt (5.6%), Lake (5%), Santa Cruz (5%), and Sacramento (4.3%).

Voters in California will consider a ballot measure on election day in November that would alter the state constitution and "eliminate right of same-sex couples to marry."

In May the California Supreme Court overturned a ban on same-sex marriages in the state.

The Court voted 4 to 3 to strike down the ban.

Opponents of gay marriage raised more than a million signatures to place the initiative on the November ballot.

The research from the Williams Institute at UCLA School of Law revealed that five counties account for nearly 80% of the estimated 11,000 same-sex couples: Los Angeles (2,719), San Francisco (2,708), San Diego (1,689), Riverside (1,247), and Alameda (475).

These are all counties known to have large and visible lesbian and gay populations and are also attractive tourist destinations for both in- and out-of-state weddings.

The Williams Institute also published three new research studies providing demographic and economic information for the 109,000 same-sex couples in California.

The first study, an analysis of recent data from the Census Bureau’s American Community Survey, shows that nearly 25% of same-sex couples in California are raising more than 52,000 children.

"Clearly, same-sex couples who seek legal recognition are in enduring relationships," said Gary Gates, Senior Research Fellow at the Williams Institute and co-author of all three studies.

"While lesbians are more likely to be in a cohabiting partnership than are gay men, gay men nonetheless have longer duration relationships, especially those who have sought official registration, 12 years average duration for gay men compared to 9 years for lesbians."

The third study, published in the journal Review of Economics of the Household, reveals that the usual predictors of marriage, economic factors like education and income, do not have as strong an impact in predicting which lesbian and gay couples will seek registered domestic partnership.

London gay youth left permanently paralysed by homophobic attack
Posted by: Star Twister - 10-06-2008, 08:52 PM - Forum: Gay-News - Replies (5)

This is sick and so wrong

A 21-year-old man has been left permanently paralysed from the waist down after he was set upon by a group of youths while he was on his way to a gay bar in east London.
A 15-year-old from East Ham was refused bail in a youth court yesterday.
He has been charged with homophobic aggravated assault with intent, occasioning grievous bodily harm.
The 21-year-old, identified only as "Olly" was set upon by a gang of five youths in Boundary street on August 28th as he walked with a female friend to the popular gay George and Dragon pub in Shoreditch, East London, the court was told.
He was verbally abused, struck on the head with a glass bottle then stabbed seven times in the back and torso.
The young man, "Olly", underwent surgery on his brain and lungs at the Royal London Hospital in Whitechapel.
The court was told that he was stabbed in his spinal cord and is now permanently paralysed.

Sarah Palin claims "I don't judge people on their sexuality but gay is a choice!"
Posted by: andy - 10-02-2008, 11:37 AM - Forum: Gay-News - Replies (16)

[img2=left]http://www.gayspeak.com/forum/images/news/mccainpalin.jpg[/img2]Sarah Palin, the vice presidential candidate for John McCain, has claimed that she is "not going to judge Americans" based on their sexuality in a CBS News interview.

The hopeful candidate was being questioned by the programme’s Katie Couric on sexuality, contraception and abortion.

When asked about her views on homosexuality, Ms Palin said that she believed homosexuality to be a "choice", and went on to say:

"I am not going to judge Americans and the decisions that they make in their adult personal relationships."

She then stated that one of her "absolute best friends" is a lesbian, and continued:

"She is not my gay friend, she is one of my best friends who happens to have made a choice that isn't a choice that I have made, but I'm not going to judge people."

Ms Palin, who is also Governor of Alaska, was also asked about her position on abortion, including in extreme cases of pregnant and underage rape victims. She said:

"I am pro-life and I am unapologetic about my position there."

"I would counsel to choose life, I would like to see a culture of life."

"I'm saying that personally I would counsel that person to choose life despite horrific, horrific circumstances."

Ms Palin said that she did not, however, feel that abortion should be an offence punishable with imprisonment.

Ms Palin has come under fire over her stance on gay rights since her selection as John McCain’s vice presidential candidate.

In September, it emerged that Ms Palin had been attending a church that advertised a conference that claimed to "cure" gays and lesbians.
