If you are basing it entirely around the hat then you might be mistaken. The symbol is from a popular (with college aged men no less) show, My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic. Plenty of teenager to college aged people watch it, calling themselves Bronies, and it has a huge market. I actually still haven't seen it, but I know a lot about it because all of my friends watch it and I just went to this convention thing where about a sixth of all the art done was My Little Pony.

And... I still cannot post links. So close to 50. IF you want to be sure, I'm afraid you'll just have to google: Rainbow Dash. And see if it is the same symbol as the one on his hat. I'm pretty sure it is though. You described it perfectly.

Until your son say 'I'm gay' I think it is wrong to assume he is gay. I think it is wrong to assume anyone is gay based on trivial facts like being effeminate, a lisp, a multi-coloured lightning bolt etc.

We aren't going to be able to tell you if your son is gay, bi or straight because we don't know him from a bar of soap, but what we all will advise you you is to either sit down and have a chat with your son, or if you are happy and your son is happy just wait until he brings the subject up with you.

I'm not familiar with the lightning bolt, but don't boys tend to think things like lightning bolts are cool? I see them in designs and tattoos everywhere for guys (even military medals sometimes include them). Maybe it means he's gay or that he wants people to know he sees gays as human beings and is an ally in the name of social justice. Or maybe it means he's a fan of the Grateful Dead (I have seen psychedelic lightning bolts for them before, though they're normally white). Or as someone else said, maybe he's a brony. Or maybe he's a neohippie who likes Harry Potter.

Or maybe he got it just because he thought it looked cool and sees no meaning in it at all and was just being snarky when you asked what it meant.

Or maybe he got it just to wig you out (teens are notorious for that). If so then I think mission accomplished. :tongue:
