Hillary and Barack court gay voters
Posted by: andy - 02-06-2008, 08:47 AM - Forum: Gay-News - No Replies

[img2=left]http://www.gayspeak.com/forum/images/news/obamaclinton.jpg[/img2]The frontrunners for the Democratic party nomination for President of the United States have been highlighting their gay-friendly credentials ahead of today's vital primary contests.

New York Senator and former First Lady Hillary Clinton posted a message on lesbian website ourchart.com outlining why she thinks LGBT Americans should vote for her.

Illinois Senator Barack Obama has revealed that many gay supporters of John Edwards, who withrdrew from the race last week, are now supporting him.

22 states will chose a Democratic candidate today, among them California, New York, Illinois and New Jersey.

These populous states have large numbers of convention delegates - California alone has 441, New York 280.

Going into Super Tuesday, Senator Clinton has 246 delegates, or 57% and Senator Obama has 40%.

Democrats Abroad and in the US territory of American Samoa will also vote.

"America deserves a President who appeals to the best in each of us, not the worst," wrote Senator Clinton.

"A President who values and respects all Americans and treats all Americans equally no matter who they are or who they love.

"I want to be that President. I want to be your President."

She listed her achievements for gay rights as a Senator and First Lady, among them fighting the Federal Marriage Amendment and co-sponsoring the Employment Non-Discrimination Act and the Matthew Shepard Local Law Enforcement Hate Crimes Prevention Act.

"I am proud to have marched in gay Pride parades as both First Lady and as Senator and to have spoken in front of so many LGBT audiences ranging from the Human Rights Campaign, Empire State Pride Agenda, the Hetrick Martin Institute, PFLAG (Parents, Families, and Friends of Lesbians and Gays), GMHC (Gay Men's Health Crisis), and the American Foundation for AIDS Research," she wrote.

On his website Barack Obama announced that nearly half of John Edwards' original LGBT steering committee are throwing their support behind him, while most of the other former members remain formally uncommitted.

"We believe that Obama can pick up more delegates if the 12% to 15% of Edwards supporters nationwide, and even more in some states, will turn out for Obama," said Eric Stern, former political adviser to the Edwards campaign and a former National Stonewall Democrats executive director.

"We believe we can make a difference."

Polling data released yesterday indicated that Senator Obama is edging into the lead over Senator Clinton.

The national CNN/Opinion Research Corporation poll of 500 registered Democrats had Obama on 49% and Clinton on 46%, with a 4.5% margin of error.

"Coming out of his overwhelming victory in South Carolina and followed quickly by his Kennedy family endorsements, Obama clearly has the momentum in this campaign," said Bill Schneider, CNN's senior political analyst.

Last week Caroline Kennedy, the only living child of former President John F Kennedy, endorsed Obama, along with her uncle Senator Ted Kennedy.

My friend made me watch this movie last night and I have to say that I was in stitches. It is quite funny if you can get around the toilet humour.

It is extremely funny and I recommend seeing it if you want a good laugh.Invasion

I just caught it on cable today for the first time. Wow, it was a funny, cheesy movie.

Nothing beats Patrick Swazey, Weslie Snipes and John Leguzamo in drag.

Has anyone else seen it?

Eminem's mum hits out and Slimfast offer...
Posted by: andy - 01-19-2008, 01:23 PM - Forum: World-News-Forum - Replies (1)

[img2=left]http://www.gayspeak.com/forum/images/news/eminem.jpg[/img2]Eminem's mother has admitted she "fears for him every waking moment", after the rap star was rushed to hospital over Christmas. Debbie Nelson released her own book about Marshall Mathers earlier this year, chronicling their life together. She has now spoken about the lifestyle her son is currently living, as he takes a prolonged break from the music industry. Earlier this week, it was reported Eminem had spent four days in a Chicago hospital during the festive season. He is said to be battling numerous health complaints, including heart problems, with his weight having apparently hit almost 15 stone. Nelson says he is now almost unrecognisable, having adopted a very unhealthy diet in recent years. "He's let his blond hair grow out so everything but the ends are dark. "His face has broken out in pimples and he's put on so much weight that he's causing all sorts of other health problems for himself", she explains. "Since childhood he's suffered bouts of pneumonia. He's always had throat infections and he's asthmatic. His diet can't help. I worry about his health all the time", Nelson says. "My Son Marshall, My Son Eminem" by Debbie Nelson is out now.

Bosses at diet product company Slim-Fast have offered rapper Eminem the chance to become their next spokesmodel, after learning he's battling weight problems.

And Slim-Fast chiefs want to help.

A spokesperson says, "Slim-Fast is a program that can really work for someone like Eminem; It's a do-able and flexible approach.

"Slim-Fast would love to offer Eminem product and assistance to help him become a potential S-F success story."

Huckabee compares gay marriage to bestiality
Posted by: andy - 01-19-2008, 01:14 PM - Forum: Gay-News - Replies (9)

[img2=left]http://www.gayspeak.com/forum/images/news/mikehuckabee.jpg[/img2]Mike Huckabee, one of the leading contenders for the Republican party nomination for President of the United States, has said he wants to change the country's Constitution to ban abortion and compared gay relationships to "a man and an animal."

In an interview with an online religious magazine Huckabee, a former Baptist preacher, said that he wants to ban abortion and "affirm" marriage.

"I don't think that's a radical view, to say we're going to affirm marriage," he said.

"I think the radical view is to say that we're going to change the definition of marriage so that it can mean two men, two women, a man and three women, a man and a child, a man and animal."

Huckabee, the former Governor of Arkansas, is neck and neck with Senator John McCain in Saturday's key primary race in South Carolina.

Mason-Dixon Polling & Research puts Huckabee on 25% and McCain on 27%.

However, in national polls Huckabee trails both McCain and former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney.

In his Beliefnet interview he said he would ban abortion outright and alter the US Constitution to reflect his view that life begins at conception.

"The Bible was not written to be amended. The Constitution was," he said.

He rejected letting states decide for themselves on the issue.

"That's the logic of the Civil War, that slavery could be okay in Georgia but not okay in Massachusetts.

"Obviously we'd today say, 'Well, that's nonsense. Slavery is wrong, period. It can't be right somewhere and wrong somewhere else.' Same with abortion."

Since winning the Iowa primary earlier this month, the evangelical Christian has become a serious contender for the White House.

He has refused to distance himself from comments he made as a candidate for the US Senate in 1992 about people infected with HIV.

Huckabee answered questions submitted to him by The Associated Press, one of which read:

"It is difficult to understand the public policy towards AIDS.

"It is the first time in the history of civilisation in which the carriers of a genuine plague have not been isolated from the general population, and in which this deadly disease for which there is no cure is being treated as a civil rights issue instead of the true health crisis it represents."

Huckabee is also on record as saying that gay people choose their behaviour.

"People who are gay say that they're born that way," he said in a TV interview in December.

"But one thing I know, that the behaviour one practices is a choice.

"We may have certain tendencies, but how we behave and how we carry out our behaviour."

Earlier this month an American organisation that works to expose the tactics of "ex-gay" groups has raised concerns Huckabee has links with known extremist groups.

TruthWinsOut questioned his links with the Christian Reconstructionist movement, which believes the Bible justifies stoning adulterers and homosexuals.

TWO's executive director Wayne Besen said:

"Huckabee should explain why he is freely associating with known extremists and how this squares with his professed sunny and optimistic vision for America.

"Furthermore, his comparison of homosexuality to pedophilia and necrophilia is as ignorant as it is offensive.

"Mike Huckabee is beginning to show his true colours, and they are quite dark and intolerant."

In Huckabee's 1998 book, Kids Who Kill, he wrote:

"It is now difficult to keep track of the vast array of publicly endorsed and institutionally supported aberrations, from homosexuality and pedophilia to sadomasochism and necrophilia."

Kids Who Kill was co-written by George Grant, a known Reconstructionist, who has also written fanatical books such as, The Changing of the Guard: Biblical Principles for Political Action.

The Cato Institute also reported that Huckabee held a fundraiser at the Houston home of Dr Steven Hotze, another leader of the radical and dangerous Reconstructionist movement.

Police top gay employers list in Scotland and Wales
Posted by: andy - 01-09-2008, 01:10 PM - Forum: Gay-News - Replies (2)

[img2=left]http://www.gayspeak.com/forum/images/news/police3.jpg[/img2]Lothian and Borders police has been named the most gay-friendly employer in Scotland.

The force came 11th in the UK list, up from 80th in 2007.

Stonewall published its 2008 Workplace Equality Index (WEI) today. It showcases Britain’s top 100 employers for lesbian, gay and bisexual people.

Tom Halpin, Deputy Chief Constable of Lothian and Borders Police, said:

"Lothian and Borders Police is delighted to receive the award of top Scottish employer for 2008 in the Stonewall Workplace Equality Index.

"The award and these achievements are testament to the Force's long standing commitment to diversity issues internally and also with the many partners we work with in this arena.

"Lothian and Borders Police has a close working relationship with Stonewall on lesbian, gay and bisexual issues and these results emphasise the importance we place on maintaining, and improving on the progress we have made over recent years."

South Wales Police was named the most gay-friendly employer in the principality, followed by the Welsh Assembly Government, Environment Agency Wales and Gwent Police.

Liz Morgan, Director of Stonewall Cymru, said:

"The standard of entry was particularly high this year as many businesses recognise the benefits of being a gay-friendly employer.

"Increasingly, the Index is being used by job-seekers and students when deciding who to take their skills to, and by employers who are looking to deliver a first class service to their employees and service users."

South Wales Police Chief Constable Barbara Wilding said:

"I am delighted at the news that South Wales Police has risen 25 places in the Stonewall Equality Index and this shows our continued commitment to creating a workplace where our LGB staff feel valued.

"South Wales Police first appeared in the index last year and since then, we have carried on working hard to set an example and continue leading organisations in Wales by driving forward the equality agenda across all areas of diversity.

"Not only do our staff benefit from this, but we will be able to deliver a quality of service to our communities.

"I am determined to ensure that people who are LGB who live in, work or visit the South Wales area can feel secure that if they do experience homophobic hate crime their police service will provide them with an A* service."

The Scottish Government was the second best Scottish employer, coming 51st in the top 100. The UK-wide top employer for 2008 is Nacro, the national crime reduction charity.

The top 100 employers were ranked according to criteria ranging from implementation of effective equality policies to practical demonstration of good practice in recruitment and mentoring and how they engage with lesbian and gay staff, customers and service users.

The WEI is also now routinely used in both the private and public sectors to measure improvement.

The 1.7 million gay people in the UK workforce use it to see how their employer compares with rivals.

It's also a key resource for the 150,000 gay students in UK universities, who use it when deciding where they want to take their talents upon graduation.

The Workplace Equality Index will be launched this evening at an awards ceremony and champagne reception at the London Transport Museum in London sponsored by Transport for London.

Openly gay soldiers still serving in US military
Posted by: andy - 01-09-2008, 01:03 PM - Forum: Gay-News - Replies (3)

[img2=left]http://www.gayspeak.com/forum/images/news/manzella.jpg[/img2]A US Army Sergeant has expressed his surprise that he wasn’t dismissed after admitting he was gay on live American TV.

Last month Army Sgt. Darren Manzella told CBS 60 Minutes that his army colleagues knew his sexuality. The programme also showed a video of Manzella kissing his former boyfriend.

"I thought I would at least be asked about the segment or approached and told I shouldn't speak to the media again," Manzella told USA Today .

Manzella is an army medic who has just returned from Kuwait. He previously earned a Combat Medical Badge for service in Baghdad.

He was the first active-duty gay service member to speak on television about life in the army under the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy which bans openly gay people from the US Armed Forces.

Manzella is only one of many other army members who have decided to be open about their sexuality with their troops and commanders yet have not been discharged.

Gay advocacy group, the Servicemembers Legal Defence Network, has said it knows of about another 500 gay army members who are serving openly without any consequences.

"That's the highest number we've ever been aware of," says SLDN spokesman Steve Ralls.

"Their experiences point to an undeniable shift in the armed forces."

Over 11,000 troops have been dismissed under the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy approved by former President Bill Clinton in 1993.

Discharges peaked at 1,273 in 2001 but halved in 2005.

The policy prohibits anyone who "demonstrates a propensity or intent to engage in homosexual acts" to serve in the US forces.

Serving gay men and lesbians are also not allowed to tell anyone about their sexual orientation or relationships.

"A lot of service members are getting 'wink-wink' treatment from their commanders," said Aaron Belkin, director of the Palm Centre at the University of California, which studies the policy.

Elaine Donnelly, whose Centre for Military Readiness favours the ban on homosexuals, has been "bothering" superiors at Manzella's base at Fort Hood, Texas to do something about his appearance on the live show.

"We have yet to get an answer," she says. "His commanders should be disciplined appropriately for failing to do their duty."

Manzella came out to his commander a year and a half ago because he was receiving anonymous e-mails threatening to expose him.

His case was investigated in 2006 and the Army viewed the video of Manzella kissing his ex-boyfriend.

They later told him they had found no evidence of homosexuality.

"They recommended that I just go back and keep doing my job," he said.

After that, he was sent to Kuwait for his second Iraq war deployment.

Eugene Fidell of the National Institute of Military Justice, a group of military legal experts, said "military managers may be turning a blind eye because it's a nuisance, and we need these people."
