  Ender's Game.
Posted by: Guest - 02-17-2013, 07:03 PM - Forum: Movies - Replies (12)

Anyone else here a Sci-Fi nut and looking forward to seeing the Ender's Game movie slated to be released this November?

I read the book Ender's Game several years ago and it was one of those really good page turners that you just could not put down. The movie has the chance of being very good in that there are some good names cast for it like Harrison Ford, Ben Kingsley, and Asa Butterfield.

When I first read the book(several times), I thought that it would make a great move, of course there is also the chance that something so good in book form could be very difficult to translate to the screen and not work out. Frank Herbert's Dune would be the first that comes to mind as having a bad transition from book to the screen.

In any case. I'm looking forward to seeing it on the big screen. Anybody else here read the book? or expecting to see the movie?

What a ridiculous man.

New Zealand First is just a ridiculous party, Winston Peters tried to partially defend this man by saying 'there's an element of truth' in Prosser's comments. Both refused to apologise

And I just saw on the news, he wrote this racist rubbish to vent his anger at having his knife confiscated from him at an airport!

I have never seen such a ridiculous kiwi, no less a member of parliament before.

He's actually even gone and offended Indonesia's ambassador to New Zealand. Brilliant.

I'm too busy to list all the things wrong with this whole things. If I were to make a list, I'd have enough bullet points to win a war.

  The Bechdel Test
Posted by: Guest - 02-01-2013, 09:26 PM - Forum: Movies - Replies (26)

the bechdel test (named after alison bechdel) is a test (shocking) that consists of three very simple criteria to assess gender bias and female presence in film . it can also be applied to books , television shows , and various other media ~

the criteria are :

1 - the film (or tv show , etc) must have at least two named female characters

(you'd be pretty surprised how many films fail the test on this first one)

2 - the two or more female characters must talk to each other

(this is where the majority of films fail. and there is some debate with various films about whether or not a one line exchange between two women means it can pass this step . i don't think it does...)

3 - the conversation between the female characters must be about something other than a man

(this one gets a lot of films that pass the first two )

if a film fails the test , that doesn't mean it's a bad movie , or an anti-feminist movie . just as films that pass are not automatically good , feminist movies . the "sex and the city" movies pass , for example , and the portrayal of women in those is pretty horrific .
the test shows the disproportionate number of male characters when compared to female , and how , in many films , the female characters only exist to further the plot for a male hero (he's usually white and usually straight).

some examples of films that do not pass the test :

the dark knight rises
district 9
the bourne films
transformers
ghostbusters
the big lebowski
the pirates of the caribbean films
fight club
the shawshank redemption
lord of the rings
braveheart
toy story
x men
tomb raider
home alone
up

and many more

it's kind of shocking , really ...

  Unacceptable!

Today. Today my patience was tested. It takes alot to test it. Today I hopped on the bus like an other day to go to work. As my bus takes off at the main transit center (where all the city buses pull in and pull out for their different routes) a man comes running past my bus frantically. He was chasing a bus and doing his best to catch up to it. The bus was still moving relatively slow as it pulled out so he starts banging on the side of the bus. it stops and he disappears into the bus. My bus pulls out. Suddenly the bus the man had stopped- stops in front of our bus and the man steps down frazzled and exhausted. Suddenly he's running for my bus which stops and lets him on. This man could have been straight but he made it very obvious he was gay. But he was out of breath and his backpack had opened and he looked like a mess.

"Wrong bus, sorry." He says. Than these two woman in front of me start talking about him.

"Oh my god, he's so gay! Look at those pants!" and she starts laughing at him, "The bus driver should've kept going just to see how fast the gay guy could've run." She then proceeded to make remarks about his fashion. That wasn't the worse part though. A few blocks later an elderly transexual hopped on board. Comments gallore. I heard several people joking about her looks in spanish because she was an american transexual. But she's standing up at the front of the bus. Very weak and tired obviously looking to see if anyone would offer her a seat. nobody budges and that woman that had made the remarks about the gay guy starts laughing. In my town one of the bus rules is that if anyone over 60 steps on board the people in the front of the bus are supposed to stand up and make way for the elderly. I've seen it done multiple times. but this time nobody up front moved. I wanted to yank her weave out of her hair. I really wanted to beat the living daylights out of her. I wanted to help the transexual too. But I just can never bring myself to give a charity/luxary to a transexual because im not sure if i will insult their pride. She was forced to stand at the front of the bus staring back at everyone in her fur coat. I saw a hint of embarrassment in her eyes. But i was afraid that if i offered her my seat all the way in the back her pride would be struck. Maybe im wrong. maybe i would've made her day. I dont know.... if i see her on my bus again and it happens again. i will offer her the seat. but right now i was just sooooooo ANGRY WITH EVERYONES ARROGANT REMARKS!!!!!!

Elton John Welcomes Second Child

By JACKIE WILLIS

January 16, 2013

Looks like two-year-old Zachary Jackson Levon is a big brother! Elton John and David Furnish announced that they are daddies once again!

The couple welcomed their second son, Elijah Joseph Daniel Furnish-John (that's a mouthful!), on Friday, Jan. 11 in Los Angeles via surrogate, John and Furnish confirmed to British magazine HELLO. Little Elijah was born at 6:40 p.m., weighing in at 8 lbs., 4 oz.

"Both of us have longed to have children, but the reality that we now have two sons is almost unbelievable. The birth of our second son completes our family in a most precious and perfect way," John, 65, and Furnish shared in a statement. "It is difficult to fully express how we are feeling at this time; we are just overwhelmed with happiness and excitement."

This is the second child for the couple, who married in 2005.

  Synthetic Marijuana
Posted by: Guest - 01-11-2013, 04:08 AM - Forum: World-News-Forum - Replies (10)

Family issues warning after teen suffers severe brain damage from synthetic marijuana .
My heart goes out to them.
In pray the police will find a way to stop it being sold.

By Kevin Reece / KHOU 11 News

HOUSTON -- On December 7th Emily Bauer began to slur her speech, stumble, complain of massive migraine headaches and began to turn violent, psychotic, and too difficult for her frightened family to control.

Her family called for an ambulance to take her to the nearest hospital. But within 24 hours she was being life-flighted from a Cypress-area hospital to the Texas Medical Center, the victim of a massive series of strokes.

She suffered severe brain damage. She was only 16 years old. And the culprit was synthetic marijuana.

“She actually had swelling on her brain that they had to drill into her head to relieve the pressure,” said her father Tommy Bryant. “They didn’t even know if she’d make it through that procedure. But they had to do it.”

Emily has turned 17 since she has been hospitalized at Children’s Memorial Hermann. But doctors warned her family it could be her last birthday. Doctors discovered that Emily’s brain damage was extensive. She was disconnected from life support. Plans were being made to donate her organs if she died. A month later Emily is still alive but she can’t walk, she can’t feed herself, and she is blind. Recently she began to recognize her parents and is able to have limited conversations. But Bryant and his wife have been given no assurances how much of their daughter will ever come back.

“It’s hard,” Bryant told us of the now month-long ordeal. “It literally, the way we’re looking at it now, is we’re gonna re-raise a child. I don’t wish this upon anybody, anybody at all,” he said.

Bryant has since discovered that his daughter and her friends were experimenting with synthetic marijuana brands like Kush and Spice that the teens purchased over the counter at a convenience store near her home. Multiple injuries and deaths across the United States have been linked to the products sold as incense or potpourri in small packets and marked with the disclaimer “not for human consumption.” Lawmakers and municipalities have been struggling for years to outlaw the products and their ingredients.

“Some of the chemicals that we’re reading online that are in these things, I mean I wouldn’t put on my grass,” said Bryant.

The National Institute on Drug Abuse says about 11 percent of high school seniors reported using synthetic marijuana, according to a 2011 survey. And calls about synthetic marijuana to the American Association of Poison Control Centers more than doubled between 2010 and 2011.

Bryant and his family, with their daughter still in the hospital and hoping she can be transferred soon to a physical rehabilitation facility, have started their own Facebook page dedicated to Emily’s story and the dangers of synthetic marijuana. It’s called S.A.F.E. – Synthetics Awareness for Emily.

“If we reach one more kid, a family that doesn’t have to go through this, that doesn’t have to spend hours upon hours, nights upon nights in a hospital not knowing what their kid is going to get back, then I feel like we’ve accomplished one small thing,” he said.

Emily’s family and friends will also hold a fundraiser and benefit for Emily Saturday January 19th at Mezzanine Lounge, 2200 Southwest Freeway in Houston to help pay for her rising medical expenses.
